Understanding Your Work Authorization Options

International students at FIU’s College of Business have several pathways to gain U.S. work experience. Curricular Practical Training (CPT) allows you to work for academic credit through internships related to your major. Optional Practical Training (OPT) provides up to 12 months of work authorization during or after your studies.

For longer-term employment, the H-1B visa serves specialty occupations, while the L-1 visa supports intracompany transfers. Each option has specific eligibility requirements and application processes. We strongly encourage you to work closely with FIU’s Office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) and The Office of Business Career Management to determine the best path for your professional journey.
